East
In all Ancient Mysteries, the East was regarded as peculiarly sacred. As the cardinal point of the sun-rising it was considered symbolic of Light, not only by sun-worshippers but by those of more enlightened religious intelligence. Hence the East is the seat of the highest officer of a Masonic Lodge - the Worshipful Master; Lodge halls or rooms are oblong from East to West; candidates travel from the West to the East in search of Light.
