Among the ancients, columns, or pillars, were used to signify princes or nobles, as if they were pillars of state. A broken column would signify a "fallen prince," the weakening of the state. Thus we have the Broken Column, familiar to every Master Mason, as the symbol of the fall of one of the chief supporters of the Craft.
